Join the debate

To broaden the debate and exchange expertise and ideas within the marine insurance sector, we created the opportunity for those businesses which provide a wide range of services to marine insurers to engage with the IUMI membership on a more formal basis. This led to the creation of a new membership category: the IUMI Professional Partners (IPP).

The aim is to enable IUMI’s members to access the expertise of our IPPs and in turn, to provide access for the IPPs to the broad membership of IUMI: not only during the annual conference but throughout the year via exchanges in meetings, webinars and at events.

IPPs have the opportunity to join the wider IUMI debates on the core issues affecting the market and to help ensure that IUMI’s position is fully representative of the insurance market as a whole.

Our IPP membership is open to firms in the following categories:

  • Legal
  • Surveying and adjusting
  • Business intelligence
  • Software

Moody’s RMS (Risk Management Solutions)

Moody’s RMS is the world’s leading provider of models, data and software for catastrophe risk management. Moody’s RMS models are used for facilitating risk transactions among policyholders, insurers, reinsurers, and brokers. Moody’s RMS model results have been accepted by rating agencies and regulatory bodies, allowing market participants to communicate risk in a common language.

Following major Marine losses in Hurricane Sandy, the Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami and the Tianjin Port explosions, Moody’s RMS released the world’s first model designed for the modeling of Marine Cargo & Specie catastrophe risk.  Insurers and reinsurers are now actively using Moody’s RMS’ model to manage their portfolio risk (reinsurance decisions and exposure aggregation risk) as well as in the underwriting process (pricing CAT load and risk selection). The Moody’s RMS model covers earthquake risk in 76 countries and wind and surge risk in 63 countries, as well as severe convective storm and inland flood in the US. Moody’s RMS has also compiled estimates of the value and type of cargo typically on hand at the top 185 ports in the world for use by insurers in assessing potential cargo accumulations in ports.

National Cargo Bureau

NCB was incorporated in May 1952 as a not-for-profit organization.  It was established following a series of maritime disasters which demonstrated the need for uniform standards and regulations.  The organization was formed from the inspection divisions of the Board of Underwriters of New York and the Board of Marine Underwriters of San Francisco, with its mission being: “Safety of Life and Cargo at Sea”.

Since inception, NCB has remained focused and continues to grow in support of its mission.  In June 2018, NCB acquired Exis Technologies, recently rebranded as NCB Hazcheck, the leading supplier of IT systems and tools for the management of dangerous goods (DG) in sea transport.  Given the profile and synergies between the two companies, the acquisition of Exis was a natural fit and has significantly enhanced NCB’s DG service capability on a global basis.

Presently, NCB’s operation is comprised of 130 employees working out of offices in the US and UK.  Operations are supplemented globally by remote inspections where applicable and a network of trusted partner companies who have been vetted and approved by NCB.

NCB conducts tens of thousands of surveys and inspections each year essential to the loading or discharge of ships and those considered integral to marine loss prevention and safety.  Marine surveyors employed by NCB are predominantly licensed ex-mariners with extensive industry experience in all manner of cargo and vessel surveys.

UNSEENLABS

As human activities impact more and more our planet every year, our seas and oceans are more than ever at the center of critical challenges regarding biodiversity protection, global warming, disputes between nations or the multiplication of illegal activities that are difficult to contain and lead to more uncertainty and rising of risks related to compliance and reputation.

Despite regulations, quotas and controls, legacy maritime safety systems are showing their limitations, and do not provide an exhaustive view of human activities at sea, and their harmful consequences. Indeed, the maritime areas to be protected are vast, often far from coasts, and cooperative security systems (AIS…) can be deactivated or manipulated.

Unseenlabs has developed a space-based radiofrequency detection technology to detect, geolocate and track any vessel at sea, cooperative or not, anytime (night and day), anywhere around the globe, regardless weather conditions.

This new layer of data, fully operational for 5 years now, provides an innovative solution for maritime insurance stakeholders looking to access to more exhaustive data and better anticipate and mitigate risks generated by human activities at sea.
